About

About the Course

The North of England FRCS General Surgery Viva Course has been helping surgical trainees pass their exit examinations since 2018.

Developed and run by a faculty of consultant surgeons and JCIE examiners based in the Northern Deanery, this course was born from a desire to provide high-quality, examiner-led viva practice to surgical trainees across the North of England and beyond.

The examination format of the FRCS (General Surgery) is demanding, and the viva component requires not only sound knowledge but also the ability to communicate complex clinical reasoning clearly and confidently under pressure. Many trainees find this the most challenging aspect of preparation.

Our course addresses this directly by placing candidates in a realistic examination environment with experienced faculty who provide structured, actionable feedback. The course has grown in reputation since its inception, and places are now consistently oversubscribed.

Our Mission

To provide the highest quality viva preparation for surgical trainees in the North of England and beyond, delivered by those who understand the examination from both sides of the table.

The Faculty

Our faculty comprises current JCIE examiners and consultant surgeons across general, upper GI, hepatobiliary, colorectal, breast, endocrine and emergency surgery from leading Northern hospitals.
